Eleven-year-old Arlen lives with his parents on their small farmstead, half a day's ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet's Brook. As dusk falls upon Arlen's world, a strange mist rises from the ground; a mist that promises a violent death to any foolish enough to brave the coming darkness, for hungry corelings - demons that cannot be harmed by mortal weapons - materialize from the vapours to feed on the living. As the sun sets, people have no choice but to take shelter behind magical wards and pray that their protection holds until the creatures dissolve with the first signs of dawn. When Arlen's life is shattered by the demon plague, he is forced to see that it is fear, rather than the demons, which truly cripples humanity. Believing that there is more to his world than to live in constant fear, he must risk leaving the safety of his wards to discover a different path. In the small town of Cutter's Hollow, Leesha's perfect future is destroyed by betrayal and a simple lie. Publicly shamed, she is reduced to gathering herbs and tending an old woman more fearsome than the corelings. Yet in her disgrace, she becomes the guardian of dangerous ancient knowledge. Orphaned and crippled in a demon attack, young Rojer takes solace in mastering the musical arts of a Jongleur, only to learn that his unique talent gives him unexpected power over the night. Together, these three young people will offer humanity a last, fleeting chance of survival.

Review:
The One Impression that stuck with me long after I had finished Peter V Brett's The Painted man was how breathtakingly fast paced the narrative was .There is no chapter upon chapter of plot setup , no multiple pages of food or scenery description , no dead end internal character monologues,no cliffhangers or sequel baits and finally no pseudphilosophical Phycobabbel . What u get is 400 pages of pure story , and a story that always moves forward . Peter Brett has stuffed 1000 plus pages of narrative in to a 400 page book . Any sort of plot synopsis would completely spoil the impact of this book but just Imagine Batman meets Land of the Dead . The Inspiration the author has derived from theses sources is pretty obvious . The painted man is one of the better books i have read this year and in spite of some minor flaws with respect how some of the characters in the book are represented , it is a book that i would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in fantasy fiction --Satish Alavandar Dec 7, 2011

A very enjoyable first novel in the Demon Cycle, It has a good mix of everything in it that I enjoy. It has memorable characters, all who get a good amount of time dedicated to their back story, helping you feel and understand their motivations for their actions. The magic system in it is called "warding" and it quite different from the usual magics and its use and how it works is explained nicely so you don't feel like you're being left out of the loop. (Unlike some books where explanation is forgotten or ignored entirely, they can do magic cause they can doesn't sit well with me) The story itself is set at an enjoyable pace, though a large amount of time is dedicated to the 3 mains "growing up" when the story jumps between characters the story still continues to flow quite nicely and doesn't break its flow. There's a wonderful mix of action, tragedy, loss and romance with a mix of terrible creatures and fascinating magic, characters who feel like they come right off the page. --By Amazon Customer on October 17, 2012

This is the first volume of a trilogy set in a fictional world where demons that only appear at night, just after sunset, have terrorized and massacred humanity for over three centuries, returning after three thousand years of absence. Hence, all dating is A.R. that is "After the Return" (of the monsters). What is left of humanity is being slowly culled every night by the various types of demons that kill and eat them, with demon-types associated to the elements (such as fire demons or air demons) or types of vegetation and landscape (such as sand demons in deserts, rock demons in mountains or wood demons in forests). Humanity is organized in five main cities and a scattering of towns and villages. Humans have little protection against the almost invulnerable monsters at night, except for magical wards inherited from a distant and barely remembered past that repel rather than kill them. So they almost all hide behind them and wait in terror until dawn. There are two exceptions in this world of despair and terror. One is the warrior who will get to be known as the Painted Man. He has vowed to dedicate his life to fight and kill the demons, and a number of other characters who the reader gets acquainted with in the book will, over time, join him. The other exception is made of the inhabitants of one of the five cities whose militant religion promotes "Holy War", and of their chief warrior and war leader in particular. --By JPSon May 12, 2013
