Vivienne Welburn, who made a considerable reputation with her
first play, `Johnny So Long', has tackled in these two remarkable new works
the difficult subject of game- and role-playing. `Coil Without Dreams'
explores with great insight the fluctuating relationships which form the
bedrock of marriage, the shifting ties of wife, sibling, husband, lover,
determined by their public marital states and their private internal
`The Treadwheel' charts with compassion the odyssey of a young Northerner
at odds with his background, his easy acceptance of the youth-cult values
that threaten to destroy him and the final awareness that those who are
left behind grow old not only in age but in bitterness. The structure of
the play cunningly involves the audience as both accomplice and judge.

Both plays are suitable for performance by young actors, who
will find that Miss Welburn has moved from the haunting naturalism of the
earlier plays to the ambiguity of illusion that is at the base of human
nature and theatre alike.
