All artists, whatever their standard, need to be able to draw and sketch, and no-one draws perfect pictures immediately. This book shows how to improve your drawing skills by developing good observation skills, choosing the best medium for your style, and by working through some of the numerous step-by-step projects and demonstrations in the book.
The book is divided into three sections. The first gives information on a wide range of media and equipment – graphite pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, carre pastels, coloured pencils and encourages the reader to experiment with each of them for different types of drawings.
The main core of the book contains 12 step-by-step projects and demonstrations in the different media. Then in the last section of the book the reader is encouraged to develop a personal style of drawing by analysing how three artists, each working on the same subject, approach and interpret it in a different way.
You can learn how to perfect your drawing skills by:
· Learning proper observation techniques for gathering information
· Carefully selecting and composing the image you want to draw
· Choosing your drawing medium to suit your subject
· Planning your drawing with care.
· Learning to develop your own personal style of drawing

You can learn to improve your drawing skills and produce the “perfect” drawing by:
· Pracising proper observation techniques for gathering information
· Carefully selecting and composing the image you want to draw
· Choosing your drawing medium to suit your subject
· Planning your drawing with care
· Learning to develop your own personal style of drawing
All artists, whatever their standard, need to be able to draw and sketch. In 'The Perfect Drawing' Valerie Wiffen shows how to improve your drawing skills by developing good observation techniques, choosing the best drawing medium for your style and proposed subject, and by working through the useful projects and demonstrations in the book.
The art of drawing is essentially a practical task and your work will improve rapidly if you adopt the right practice. When you have decided what to draw, you need to select a medium that best expresses your choice. Try as many media as possible, from graphite pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, carre pstels, and coloured pencils and familiarize yourself with their characteristics.
then you need to plan the outlines of your drawing. What viewpoint will you take? How large do you want your drawing to be? Which format will work best? Valerie Wiffen provides answers to these and many other questions in this comprehensive book. She also gives advice on practising techniques for making your drawings look three dimensional; learning to manipulate tone to give the illusion of distance and space; and using pattern and texture to bring forms to life.
Throughout the book step-by-step demonstrations in a variety of media illustrate each concept and technique: photographs along the top of the page show the drawing as it progresses and seperate artworks show what has been done at each stage. In the last section of the book, the reader is encouraged to develop a personal style of drawing by analysing how three artists, each working on the same subject, approach and render that subject in an entirely different way.
Valerie Wiffen studied at the Royal College of Art in London and has taught drawing and painting for many years. She also exhibits her work at the New English Art Club, The Royal Academy Summer Show, and other mixed shows. Her previous books include Ways of Drawing Faces and Portraits, Ways of Drawing the Human Figure, Figure Sketching School and Learn to Draw Still Life.
