From the Back Cover:

"The picture was enormous, dwarfing all the others. She was dressed all in black except that a long white stole was draped around her neck and fell on both sides to the hem of her dress. She held long black gloves and there was a little dog at her feet which, like her hands, looked impossibly thin and narrow. 'She has cruel hands,' he said as the portrait disappeared into the shadow, 'they're like spikes.'"

Sam, Floss and their foster brother, Magnus are sent to an old abbey to spend their summer holidays with cousin Maude.
